Made in Şişhane is a book realized within the scope of the project of the same name, which was initiated by Aslı Kıyak İngin in 2006. It focuses on Şişhane, an area with a hundred-year-old tradition of lighting production and trade. It discusses not only this locality, but also other small-scale production areas and workshops in the city of Istanbul that various power interests want to evict, with the excuse that they are harmful to the environment. In these pages, they are discussed in terms of their very precious heritage of production, their motivations for creativity, and their future potential. The focus is on processes, stories, and experiences rather than products. To promote the visibility and sustainability of the networks that exist in these areas, many activities are being realized as part of the Made in Şişhane project. Since urban transformation takes place so rapidly in Istanbul, one of the main subjects of the agenda is how to preserve for the future (or whether that is possible) the dynamics and unique practices of small-scale production areas in the city center, and what is at risk if they are decentralized as planned. The aim of the Made in Şişhane book is to increase the visibility and urgency of this matter, and to create a more participatory ground for discussion. The potentialities and importance of Şişhane and similar areas are presented through interviews with different groups that interact with the small-scale producers, the individual voices of those producers, and articles that evaluate similar situations in cities around the world. Also included is a summary of the activities that have been realized within the Made in Şişhane Project since 2006.
