This book [İrfan Baloğlu – The Unhindered Life of a Disabled Engineer] recounts the autobiography of İrfan Balıoğlu, who has FSHD. FSHD is a type of muscle disease that manifests differently in each individual. Sometimes a person may not even realise they are ill, whilst at other times their movements may be significantly restricted. As of today, there is no known cure for the disease; patients can only be supported through appropriate exercises and physiotherapy.

İrfan Balıoğlu began to experience the first symptoms during early adolescence. Whilst at secondary school, his motor skills deteriorated; by the time he reached high school, he had difficulty raising his arm to write on the blackboard, and had started counting the steps he needed to climb. The progression of the disease was asymmetrical; first one arm, then the corresponding leg on the opposite side would be affected, and this pattern continued. With each passing year during his university years, walking became increasingly difficult for him. Thereafter, the progressive nature of FSHD continued over the years, eventually leading to a stage where he could only move with the support of others and breathe with the aid of a ventilator.

In addition to his battle with health issues, İrfan Balıoğlu’s childhood, adolescence and early adulthood were marked by financial hardship. When he first began his career, he had no support network to fall back on. He would reach the esteemed position he holds today through immense struggle. His unyielding attitude would ensure he was recognised as one of Türkiye’s most accomplished engineers and become a sought-after structural design engineer due to his pioneering work. Furthermore, even before the term ‘computer’ had been coined, he would write computer programmes and continue this work with passion for many years.

İrfan Balıoğlu’s life is a source of inspiration for us all. However, his life holds a special message, particularly for those living with FSHD. Whilst this book contains important insights into structural design engineering and the history of architecture due to his professional work, it was written primarily with FSHD patients in mind, in the hope of empowering them.
